Mary's City of David - A Pictorial History

Mary's City of David
A Pictorial History

This fascinating story behind the famous Israelite community began in 1903. Benton Harbor, Michigan was the location chosen by Mary and Benjamin Purnell to begin their communal order. The House of David order attracted a worldwide following, produced a legendary baseball team, two traveling jazz bands (amongst the best in the 1920s), and built the premiere "pre-Disney" amusement park in mid-America.

This fascinating story is printed on the finest enamel paper with duo-tone reproductions for the highest quality available, and will surely become a collector's treasure, and a reference tool for the curious and the serious. Fully illustrated with more than 250 documents and photographs, this deluxe, 11" x 14", 181 page show piece from one of America's oldest and most famous communal societies will become a valuable reference tool for libraries, students and scholars. This large and colorful volume will also be an exclusive collectible for the casual reader's bookshelf, or displayed as a conversational piece of Americana.

All copies purchased via this on-line special
will also include the author's autograph!

1934 Vegetarian Cookbook 4th Edition

1934 Vegetarian Cookbook
4th Edition

Mary's City of David has re-printed and published the original 1934 Vegetarian Cookbook into its 4th Edition. This is a new format that is all inclusive of the 141 page original manuscript with its forward and preface, but also 44 photo images that illuminate the history of the House of David Vegetarian restaurants and the many aspects that supported them and colony enterprises that made them so successful for over 60 years.  This current printing is a very attractive and colorful book that takes the ingredients and puts them into an historic context and time frame.

This is a hand made volume revealing the recipes that were popular for most of the 20th Century and showcasing the unique "taste" of the Israelite House of David's longstanding presence in southwestern Michigan and its many contributions to the wealth of the regional history.

NOTE: Because of the limited number in printing, there will be no wholesale distributions and we must limit collectors and archival/educational facilities to three copies.

Crown of Thorns, House of David Victory and Legal Troubles Reviewed

Crown of Thorns, House of David Victory and Legal Troubles Reviewed

By Francis Thorpe, in 1929, this is an invaluable text from the Israelite's first Secretary in 1905, who would be part of the triumvirate that went to Lansing to win the House of David appeal in the Michigan State Supreme Court in 1929. Thorpe gives a concise and accurate overview of the decade of legal troubles the House of David would endure and finally, at the end, would win a crucial victory in the State's Highest Court.

Images of America - The House of David Baseball Team

Images of America - The House of David Baseball Team

The Israelite House of David was founded in 1903, as a religious colony in Benton Harbor, Michigan. An entrepreneurial group of worshippers, the colony accomplished much within the community and is credited with inventing the automatic pinsetter used in bowling and the first cold storage facility in the county. However, it was the House of David baseball players that caught the nation's attention, with their long hair and beards, which were forbidden to be cut or shaved as a code of their faith. This traveling baseball team toured throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As news of their prowess spread, the team received more and more press throughout the country. Much like the Negro Leagues of the same period, the House of David baseball players would crisscross the country, playing with such greats as the Kansas City Monarchs, Pittsburgh Crawfords, along with Satchel Paige and his All Stars.

Authors Hawkins and Bertolino, both members of the Society of American Baseball Research, have compiled a collection of nearly 200 rare images that showcase the adventurous and resourceful spirits of these little - mentioned baseball players. With never before seen photographs, they invite the reader to catch a glimpse of one of the most entertaining and remarkable barnstorming baseball teams.

Images of America -- St. Joseph and Benton Harbor

Two distinct communities which share equally vibrant histories, the Twin Cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor possess a rich heritage rooted in agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and tourism. Through more than 200 photographs, this book documents the cities development from the time when pioneers first struggled to create a community in the wilderness. It pays tribute to the men and women who labored to establish farms and industries, and celebrates the delightful beaches and amusement park such as the House of David and Silver Beach Amusement Park that have brought joy to generations of residents and visitors alike.

Resorts of Berrien County

Resorts of Berrien County

For over 125 years, Berrien County has beckoned visitors with its magnificent beaches, attractions and events. During the early 20th century, some visitors to southwestern Michigan were upper class industrialists, while others were working class families belonging to close-knit ethnic communities. As the area developed into a resort haven, elaborate mansions shared the beach with the cottages of Irish, Czech, Swedish, Jewish, Greek, Lithuanian, Polish, Italian, and African-American communities. This book chronicles the early history of Berrien County's resort culture--from the twinkling amusement parks of Silver Beach and the House of David and the marathon dances at Shadowland Pavilion to the mineral baths at the Whitcomb Hotel and the fruit orchards found throughout the "Heart of the Fruit Belt".

Portraits, The Face of a Century in Faith The Israelite House of DavidPortraits

The Face of a Century in Faith The Israelite House of David, 1903 and the Reorganization by Mary Purnell, 1930

R. James Taylor
2005, second printing 2011.
Printed and published at Mary's City of David

This deluxe soft cover book was first printed in an 80 copy limited edition in 2005 and sold out in 2 months!

This is a hand-made book featuring 80 members portraits from the photo archives of Mary's City of David. With each portrait there is a brief bio/sketch along with accompanying texts from the various colony literatures, written by Mary and Benjamin Purnell that give a sense of what the colony people were drawn to during the 1903-2003 century in faith.

Most of the portraits have never been published before and many of the members are relatively obscure within the history, but had their places of importance within the daily workings and success of the colonies. This second, "limited", edition is of a smaller number of 30 as it is a laborious process of printing, assemblage and binding (making covers) for each book of 157 pages.
