1934 Vegetarian Cookbook
4^th Edition

Mary's City of David has re-printed and published the original1934 Vegetarian Cookbook into its 4^th Edition. This is a new format that is all inclusive of the 141 page original manuscript with its forward and preface, but also 44 photo images that illuminate the history of the House of David Vegetarian restaurants and the many aspects that supported them and colony enterprises that made them so successful for over 60 years.  This current printing is a very attractive and colorful book that takes the ingredients and puts them into an historic context and time frame.

This edition has a numbered, 100 copy printing for 2008, and is soft cover with 197 pages, including an historic over view Forward to the present edition.

This is a hand made volume revealing the recipes that were popular for most of the 20^th Century and showcasing the unique "taste" of the Israelite House of David's longstanding presence in southwestern Michigan and its many contributions to the wealth of the regional history.

Crown of Thorns, House of David Victory and Legal Troubles Reviewed

By Francis Thorpe, in 1929, this is an invaluable text from the Israelite's first Secretary in 1905, who would be part of the triumvirate that went to Lansing to win the House of David appeal in the Michigan State Supreme Court in 1929. Thorpe gives a concise and accurate overview of the decade of legal troubles the House of David would endure and finally, at the end, would win a crucial victory in the State's Highest Court.

Images of America - The House of David Baseball Team

The Israelite House of David was founded in 1903, as a religious colony in Benton Harbor, Michigan. An entrepreneurial group of worshippers, the colony accomplished much within the community and is credited with inventing the automatic pinsetter used in bowling and the first cold storage facility in the county. However, it was the House of David baseball players that caught the nation's attention, with their long hair and beards, which were forbidden to be cut or shaved as a code of their faith. This traveling baseball team toured throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As news of their prowess spread, the team received more and more press throughout the country. Much like the Negro Leagues of the same period, the House of David baseball players would crisscross the country, playing with such greats as the Kansas City Monarchs, Pittsburgh Crawfords, along with Satchel Paige and his All Stars.

Authors Hawkins and Bertolino, both members of the Society of American Baseball Research, have compiled a collection of nearly 200 rare images that showcase the adventurous and resourceful spirits of these little - mentioned baseball players. With never before seen photographs, they invite the reader to catch a glimpse of one of the most entertaining and remarkable barnstorming baseball teams.

Female Ballplayer: Featuring the signing of the first female athlete to a professional contract in 1933, Jackie Mitchell was a House of David employee that hurled the first inning in the victory over the St. Louis Cardinals 8-6 in September. Featured are the authentic score card from the St. Louis game, a picture of Ms. Mitchell and George Anderson of the House of David, who batted 2 for 4 in the match.

Benjamin Purnell's study of 'Jesus the Good Shepherd'

Benjamin Purnell's study of "Jesus the Good Shepherd", a copy authentically reproduced of a pencil study in preparation for his published and popular 1912 portrait. Though it is unsigned (Benjamin never signed any of his numerous pencil and pastel works) and undated, with examination and comparison, it closely resembles the finished and published portrait, and in all of its details it is obviously drawn by the same hand.

Recently found within the archives of Mary Purnell's effects, and now glassed and framed on display in her Shiloh home.
