Crown of Thorns, House of David Victory and Legal Troubles ReviewedBy Francis Thorpe, in 1929, this is an invaluable text from the Israelite's first Secretary in 1905, who would be part of the triumvirate that went to Lansing to win the House of David appeal in the Michigan State Supreme Court in 1929. Thorpe gives a concise and accurate overview of the decade of legal troubles the House of David would endure and finally, at the end, would win a crucial victory in the State's Highest Court. | Only $13.75 Includes Shipping & Handling |

Images of America - The House of David Baseball TeamThe Israelite House of David was founded in 1903, as a religious colony in Benton Harbor, Michigan. An entrepreneurial group of worshippers, the colony accomplished much within the community and is credited with inventing the automatic pinsetter used in bowling and the first cold storage facility in the county. However, it was the House of David baseball players that caught the nation's attention, with their long hair and beards, which were forbidden to be cut or shaved as a code of their faith. This traveling baseball team toured throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. As news of their prowess spread, the team received more and more press throughout the country. Much like the Negro Leagues of the same period, the House of David baseball players would crisscross the country, playing with such greats as the Kansas City Monarchs, Pittsburgh Crawfords, along with Satchel Paige and his All Stars. Authors Hawkins and Bertolino, both members of the Society of American Baseball Research, have compiled a collection of nearly 200 rare images that showcase the adventurous and resourceful spirits of these little - mentioned baseball players. With never before seen photographs, they invite the reader to catch a glimpse of one of the most entertaining and remarkable barnstorming baseball teams. Only $22.25 Includes Shipping & Handling |

Resorts of Berrien CountyFor over 125 years, Berrien County has beckoned visitors with its magnificent beaches, attractions and events. During the early 20th century, some visitors to southwestern Michigan were upper class industrialists, while others were working class families belonging to close-knit ethnic communities. As the area developed into a resort haven, elaborate mansions shared the beach with the cottages of Irish, Czech, Swedish, Jewish, Greek, Lithuanian, Polish, Italian, and African-American communities. This book chronicles the early history of Berrien County's resort culture--from the twinkling amusement parks of Silver Beach and the House of David and the marathon dances at Shadowland Pavilion to the mineral baths at the Whitcomb Hotel and the fruit orchards found throughout the "Heart of the Fruit Belt". Resorts of Berrien County, Elaine Thomopoulos, Ph.D. Arcadia Publications, Images of America series, 2005, 128 pages. Only $24.25 Includes Shipping & Handling |

Baseball Fever
This detailed history of early baseball in rural Michigan focuses on the evolution of America's pastime from child's game to organized sport and challenges the notion that baseball's development was strictly an East Coast phenomenon. In this well-researched study of Michigan baseball from the 1830s to the 1870s. Drawing on personal memoirs, period photographs, and an extensive, often hilarious variety of newspaper accounts, he paints a vivid portrait of a game that was widely -- if erratically -- played well before the Civil War and gradually evolved from an informal amusement into an activity for local groups of young men and finally into a serious, organized sport. Baseball Fever, Peter Morris, University of Michigan Press, 2003, 390 pages, 6" x 9", paper bound. Only $23.25
