My history is entwined with the House/City of David. My Grandfather, Father, Uncle, Grandmother, Greatgrandmother, and Mother all belonged to that grand historic Colony in the early years.

As a youth (born 1937) I was influenced by the Brothers and Sisters there. I often sat on Sister Marys lap and listened to her, and Cora Mooney preach. I grew up at the House of David Park, enjoying the amateur night and jazz band, delicious ice cream (especially the waffle cones). The trains were simply the greatest thrill as they circled the park with their high pitched whistle and puffer bellies belching smoke. Dad and his brother, drove the trains during the teens.Grandma lived in Bethany house near a small park. I fondly remember the farms. The Rocky, Marilyn, 40 acres and the Swamp and walked along the St Joe river that ran in the back of the Rocky Farm. I loved the zoo with its neat stone model house and monkeys. Drinking the Eden Springs water was a treat as we always took some home with us. I never lived at the colony but was raised only a few miles from it, on Agard St near Union Park. Grandma Claudia Flake was a member over 50 years and Great Grandma Martha Holman died there before I was born. Luther Jackson, (my father) Arthur Jackson, his brother and his father John spent a few years there in the teens. Luther and John lived on High Island, in lake Michigan for a short period. Dad and Mom (Pearl Flake) met there and married in 1930.

I have the fondest of memories still and am excited to locate this great web site and to see that the colony still is active and lives on. I have pictures that date back to those early years and 3 of the porcelain statues that I kept after nearly 50 years of being absent from that locale.

What a wonderful trip back in memory land, thanks to the web site, and thanks for the concern to remind the world of this incredible place.

Miss the House of David and Mary's City of David ... was a grand place.

When I was a young girl, I appeared in the amateur contest more than once at the Beer Gardens at the HOD.  I got into the finals and won (Hawaiian dancer).  I made my professional debut as a dancer on that grand old stage with Chic Bell and Bill Dragland!

What memories I have! Sure would be wonderful if the places I remember were restored.

I too took accordion lessons from "that lady" (Mrs. Cady).

Yes, those were the days (the 1960's) !!!!

Those who remain, will stay in my prayers.

Been checking this site on and off for a while.  I was raised in about 5 miles from the House of David in the late 40's - 60's and spent a lot of time there as a child.  I took accordian lessons from a lady the lived there.  My grandfather use to tell me about Ben & Mary Parnell.

Great site.  I read everything I can find on the House of David since I have lived here all my life.  Thanks for keeping the history alive.

I'am now residing in Ocean Springs ,Ms, everytime i go past a little place located just north of Gulfport, ms is place called the city of david, dont believe its part of Ben's and Mary's city of david.  If my grandfather was still alive, he could still tell some stories about the house of david. (Samuel Hawn ) he's survived by my two uncles michael and bill Hawn.  My grandmother Frankie Hawn was a cook in the vegetarian restruant.  Well, thanks again for keeping the memories alive. Paul A. I just love to come to this website to see all the wonderful stories that everyone writes about of their fond memories of the House Of David. I collect post cards and newspaper clippings on the House Of David as well as Downtown St. Joe, Benton Harbor, & the old Silver Beach Amusement Park.

I come  spend my summers in St. Joe with family & visit the House of David when I am here. I live in Nashville, TN &  Sedona, AZ several months out of the year. But it sure is nice to think back at the good ole days of the House Of David!

My Grandparents came from Texas in 1913 with 6 of their 7 children.  My Grandfather died in 1915.  My Father, Clay "Mud" Williams, and Uncle, Austin "Tex" Williams, played for the House of David Baseball Team.

I visited my Grandmother there almost every weekend until she died about 1958 or 1959.  We often went to the Park and rode the train and I almost always had an ice cream cone, with a sugar cone of course, even though I was allergic to milk.

The last time I was there was when I was 16 when my Aunt and Uncle came up from Texas for a visit and we ate vegetarian spaghetti at the restaurant.

I have many fond memories of being there.  I have pictures of myself at the park riding the cars and by the miniature houses.  It was a great place.  My Dad drove the train when he was younger.

I am totally fascinated with the surviving communities of the English Prophets. There are so few left in England and the UK, so it is good to know that other countries continue this ancient British tradition.

My father came to the City of David with his father when he was young.  He worked in the restaurant / cafeteria until he left for college in the late 50's.

I visited there when I was younger.  I can remember the arcade games and the outdoor park.

My brother came to visit you recently and you had saved photos belonging to my grandfather, who lived and died there.  The photos you passed on are priceless to us, the only pictures we have of a young grandmother and grandfather.  Thank you so much for such a considerate act, both the saving of the pictures and the giving of them to our family.

Good Luck as you go forward and I hope to return to visit again some day.

As a child (1950 to 1960), my family spent every summer at the City of David in a 1 room cottage (cottage #79).

My mother even had dishes and pots and pans stored there as she cooked a number of meals on a small 2 burner electric hot plate (don't know what ever happened to the dishes and pots and pans).

What wonderful memories I have.  Thank you for this site.

I am now 65 years old and as a young boy recall my father talking about the House of David touring baseball teams.

I have a dim memory that the team may have played an exhibition game in the town in which I was raised; Kamloops, British Columbia. This would have been in the late 1940's or early 1950's. Is there any record of the team ever appearing in Kamloops?

You have produced an excellent website and I congratulate you on this effort. I will definitely be ordering some memorabilia from your giftshop in the future.

As a young child I remember visiting an uncle, Samuel Sipes, at the House of David (where he lived and to which he belonged).

We always stayed in a large, 1 room cabin with a small screen porch.  Uncle Sipes would take us to ride the train, go to the pavilion, and eat ice cream.  I still have a few little wooden boxes with the House of David insignia.

I would love to locate any information regarding him.  I think he died in the early 1960's.  If anyone has any information please contact me.

                                                                          Thank you,

As I grew up in Benton Harbor and spent summers at the House of David enjoying the beauty of the land, the huge gold fish in the ponds, the music, the train rides, and the ice cream; it all brings back fond memories of my youth.  I was even privileged to have my wedding rehearsal dinner (May, 1966) in the dining area of the House of David.  I was pleasantly surprised and pleased to find out that the House of David is still in existence as I left Benton Harbor in 1970 and have not had the opportunity to visit that area of Benton Harbor since that time.  I certainly will make a point of visiting and taking a tour when I am in Benton Harbor in the future.
